Stripe acquires AI model gateway OpenRouter in an $8 billion deal.
Stripe just made its boldest bet yet on the future of software infrastructure.
The fintech giant agreed to acquire OpenRouter, the world’s leading AI model gateway. Sources value the landmark deal at slightly over $8 billion.
OpenRouter acts as the central switchboard for artificial intelligence. The platform routes developer requests across 400 models from 80 different AI providers, including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. And it currently processes over 10 trillion tokens daily for 10 million developers.
This acquisition makes absolute sense.
Stripe has built its multi-billion-dollar empire on simplifying money flows across the internet. And AI development today runs on a completely new currency: tokens. Owing to this, companies need real-time orchestration to manage model accuracy, response speed, and compute costs at once.
Stripe now controls both sides of enterprise profitability by combining its payment rails with OpenRouter’s model routing. The company will also manage how businesses earn revenue and how they spend compute resources.
OpenRouter faces aggressive competition from cloud giants and direct AI labs, to be clear. Every major tech platform wants to lock developers into its own ecosystem. Yet OpenRouter offers absolute model neutrality- a critical advantage that single-provider platforms simply cannot match.
Stripe founder Patrick Collison often speaks about growing the GDP of the internet. With this blockbuster acquisition, Stripe expands that mission from moving dollars to routing global intelligence.
