NPCI introduces contactless NFC payments for UPI, pre-empting Apple Pay’s long-awaited debut in India with a slick, offline-friendly upgrade.
India’s payment authority just gave millions of shoppers a much faster way to pay for their morning chai. Users can now skip scanning QR codes or unlocking apps entirely with the launch of contactless tap-and-pay for UPI. You simply tap your phone against the store terminal and walk away.
This move isn’t just about shaving seconds off checkout lines. It’s sharp market strategy.
Apple is preparing to roll out Apple Pay across India, bringing its slick tap-to-pay wallet to iPhone users. By adding native NFC capabilities to UPI today, NPCI effectively neutralizes Apple’s biggest feature advantage before the tech giant even lands.
NPCI also built this upgrade with local realities in mind. The system processes tap transactions even when your phone loses cell service, using the merchant’s connection to settle the bill. That solves a massive headache in crowded markets and underground metros.
UPI already processes over 24 billion transactions every month.
While Apple Pay will certainly appeal to high-end cardholders, UPI Tap and Pay keeps fast, frictionless payments free and accessible for every smartphone user in the country. NPCI isn’t just defending its home turf; it’s proving that open public infrastructure can out-innovate Silicon Valley.
