Anthropic pledges $48B in shares for the public good ahead of its IPO. But little do these tech bros know that corporate philanthropy cannot fix the risks of runaway AI models.
Anthropic just pledged 5% of its equity, i.e., a staggering $48 billion based on its latest valuation, to a “public good” fund.
The Claude creator plans to direct these massive resources toward public distributions and non-profits, citing potential economic instability from rapid AI automation. This grand gesture arrives at a very convenient time- just as the company prepares for a massive $1.5 trillion stock market listing next month.
Beware of the corporate altruism.
While giving away billions might sound noble, it is a calculated PR shield.
Anthropic built its brand on AI safety, yet its own reports warn that its models could soon self-replicate and quietly infiltrate everyday household devices. Funding charitable initiatives doesn’t erase the existential and infrastructural risks that autonomous software creates.
Throwing billions at displaced workers acts as a Band-Aid over a wound the AI industry deepens every single day.
And this move also triggers a dangerous PR race among tech billionaires.
Elon Musk immediately responded by promising SpaceX stock to “every kid in America,” turning serious systemic disruption into an ego-driven circus. Tech giants want you to focus on their grand promises of wealth redistribution so we’re occupied enough to never question the unaccountable power of their tech.
In short? Anthropic wants credit for solving problems that its own tech creates.
We must demand real safety guardrails and strict regulation, not multi-billion-dollar distraction funds designed to smooth over an upcoming IPO.
