Amazon Invests $3 Billion in the Fast-Paced Indian Market

Amazon is dropping $3 billion into India’s quick-commerce market, and it is about time.

Amazon, a company that practically invented online shopping, has found itself surprisingly far behind in India’s fast-delivery boom. Local powerhouses such as Blinkit, Zepto, and Swiggy currently dominate 77% of India’s market, while Amazon sits on a modest 6% slice.

Is the e-commerce giant planning to close that gap anytime soon?

Amazon is focused on one domain at a time. It’s rather placing a phased, pragmatic bet- planning to roll out $1 billion by 2027 and the remaining $2 billion by 2030.

Most of that money will fund hundreds of new neighbourhood micro-warehouses for its Amazon Now service, nearly doubling its footprint to 1,300 stores by next spring. Amazon is also pouring cash into AI demand forecasting and focusing strictly on daily repeat essentials- smartly skipping slow-moving high-ticket items that clog up dark store shelves.

Playing catch-up against deeply entrenched local rivals won’t be effortless. But writing off Amazon would be a mistake.

The company already has tens of millions of Prime members in India who trust its platform.

Amazon can easily convert regular shoppers into fast-delivery users. It doesn’t have to build a customer base from scratch; plugging instant delivery into its app is sufficient- and a 30-min delivery is already available for Prime members in India, but for select products.

It might have taken Amazon a while to commit to the race, but this $3 billion push proves it is finally ready to fight for every doorstep.
