After 15 historic years leading Apple, Tim Cook has stepped down as CEO, handing the keys to hardware engineering chief John Ternus.
Cook is not leaving Apple completely. He moves directly into the Executive Chairman role to guide policy and global strategy.
Ternus brings a vastly different background to the desk.
Cook built his reputation as an operational genius who streamlined global supply chains. Whereas Ternus is a pure hardware engineer who spent over two decades building daily-use products. He was in charge of the Mac, iPad, and the massive transition to Apple Silicon chips.
The strategy behind this shift makes total sense.
The global smartphone market is maturing rapidly, and yearly software updates no longer thrill buyers. Apple needs fresh hardware breakthroughs to stay ahead in the rapidly accelerating AI race. And placing a veteran product creator in charge signals a return to engineering-first leadership.
Cook set an extraordinarily high financial bar. Yet Ternus inherits a company at peak financial strength, giving him the freedom to focus on the next generation of physical design.
